WEEKLY REVIEW
Josh- In what ended up being a close matchup, Josh topped Kendall this week scoring 116.5 points with a well-balanced attack from his entire lineup. Jared Goff led the way, scoring 26.5 points with each of his RBs and WRs scoring between 12 and 18. Now his fifth win in a row, Josh’s team has been on fire and has yet to majorly slip up. Since obtaining OBJ, the WR has been on fire for Josh, who also added Deandre Hopkins in a trade with Kyle this week. Although Josh would like to see more production from the likes of Mark Ingram and others, his team does not have a specific weak position to exploit. However, with Saquon Barkley, Zach Ertz, and OBJ on bye for his heavyweight matchup with Trevor, week nine might be where we see the streak end.
Jack- To be honest I avoided the two-spot for as long as I could, but with a win over Trevor and sole possession of second place in the standings it seems unavoidable. After a big 156-point week, I have reclaimed third in PPG while maintaining tenth in PAPG. Going into a week nine matchup with playoffs dark horse Alex, my RB trio of Kamara, Conner, and White should be healthy enough to lead the way.
Trevor- After losing to yours truly in week eight, Trevor has dropped three of his last four and moved down to the rest of the pack. Despite falling short, Trevor’s lineup posted an impressive 122.5 points behind Patrick Mahomes, Todd Gurley, and Tyler Boyd who combined for 80.6. Trevor still has one of the most explosive lineups in the league, but lack of personnel changes and poor start/sit decisions have hampered his recent success. With David Johnson and Tyler Boyd on bye, Trevor will be forced to make some moves if he wants to stand a chance against Josh in week nine. I expect Josh to roll this week and maybe Trevor will start listening to some trade offers.
Riley- One of the hotter teams recently, Riley bounced back from a week seven loss to defeat Brandon and move onto 4-4. Fifth in scoring, Riley’s lineup has shown significant improvement as the season has progressed, picking up Andrew Luck and benefitting from the emergence of Joe Mixon. Although Riley has some undoubtedly heavy hitters, he also has holes in his lineup that are often filled with duds. With Isaiah Crowell failing to break double digits for the third week in a row, he could seriously use an RB2 if he wants to make some noise in the playoffs. This of course, would be solved by the return of Leveon Bell, however that is looking less likely every week. With a few additions or maybe surprise performances, Riley has a chance to be a real contender going forward.
Brandon- At 122.5 PAPG, Brandon’s team has continued to get the short end of the stick. Despite the unfortunate matchups, Brandon has fought his way to be fourth in PPG, showing relative consistency in doing so. With zero points from Njoku, 3.9 from Hilton, and 4 interceptions thrown by Winston, week eight was an all around bust for Brandon as he lost to Riley to fall to 3-5. Even with the disappointing record, he is only one game out of playoffs and certainly has the potential to close the gap. With Tyreek Hill and Kareem Hunt’s consistent production, Marlon Mack could be the piece that gets Brandon over the hump and turns Ls into Ws. Between Hunt, Hill, and Melvin Gordon, he has his bases covered heading into a crowded playoff picture.
Bryce- Scoring a personal best 132.5 points, Bryce defeated a struggling Kyle team this week for his second win in a row. The explosion of points came from everywhere, with everyone except for his kicker and a WR scoring 14 or more. Averaging just 92.7 PPG, week eight seems to be just an anomaly, especially considering he started a receiver that did not take the field. Lucky or not, Bryce has moved onto 4-4 and currently holds the fifth seed in the playoff picture. While I do not find his roster particularly talented, wins are wins and Bryce continues to stumble upon them. With Joe Mixon, Alshon Jeffery, and Andrew Luck out on bye this week for Riley, Bryce has the opportunity to capitalize and move above .500, assuming he starts people who actually play.
Kendall- Kendall fell 4.4 points shy of pulling off a monumental upset of Josh in week eight, falling to 3-5 on the season. Scoring 112.1 points, Kendall has averaged 121.3 PPG over the last two weeks, showing significant progress from lackluster performances earlier in the season. Utilizing a couple of trades and waiver pickups, he has been able to rebuild his roster with more depth, making him competitive week to week. With Julio and Thielen at WR and the Latavius Murray/Dalvin Cook combo serving as his RB1, Kendall is one RB away from being a truly complete and dangerous team. Facing an ailing Kyle squad with Fournette/Yeldon on bye, Kendall has an opportunity to prove he can roll with the big boys by picking up a W in week nine.
Alex- After losing the least impressive game of the season in week seven to Bryce, Alex came back to defeat Julian in week eight, moving him up to 3-5. Mike Evans, A.D., and Kenyan Drake all had solid performances contributing to his 120.6-point total. Alex also continued the trend of picking as poor defense, with Baltimore scoring -4 against Carolina. Although his roster lacks the star power that others have, consistency from Zeke and high output from Mike Evans could prove to be enough to push him back into the playoff picture. Only one game behind the pack, Alex’s week nine matchup against myself is the perfect opportunity to gain some ground in the standings.
Kyle- Mostly using points from earlier in the season, Kyle’s team is sixth in scoring at 107.9 PPG. However, Kyle has averaged 89.6 PPG over the last three weeks and has not cracked 100 since week five. Poor RB performances paired with -6 points from the Miami D/ST doomed him in week eight, losing in a landslide to Bryce and extending his skid to three games. Yeldon has been productive in Fournette’s absence, but lack of depth at the RB2 position has consistently limited Kyle’s success. The addition of Nick Chubb should aid this but losing Deandre Hopkins will likely negate any progress made. Facing a stout Kendall team in week nine with the Jaguars on bye is problematic to say the least, but the team says Fournette should be back in week ten which would greatly improve his roster. Despite his recent regression, Kyle still sits at 4-4 and a full-strength lineup by week ten should be more than enough to compete for a playoff spot.
Julian- After a flop performance in week seven, Julian’s team showed up in week eight scoring 105.9 points behind 31 from Deshaun Watson. Unfortunately for him, it was not enough to top Alex, and his two-game skid has put him at 2-6 in last place. With the standings as tight as they are, Julian’s mathematical chances of making playoffs are not as slim as they appear, however the winning would need to start against Brandon in week nine. With only Corey Clement on bye, his lineup looks more formidable than weeks past, gaining consistency from Philip Lindsay coupled with the high ceilings of Stefon Diggs and Michael Thomas. Slowly but surely Julian has proven to have made progress, but will it be fast enough to remain competitive in the post season.
